Self-compassion is a flourishing concept in Western psychology. Evidence from scientific research shows that self-compassion is associated with positive outcomes, such as reduced depression symptoms, enhanced well-being, and increased resiliency to stress. The SCOPE Trial is composed of four parts that span over a 12-month period, including a 7-week online program that was designed to stave off the progression of depression. By participating in the study, you will receive up to $150 in electronic gift cards. The main objective of the SCOPE Trial is to examine whether the online self-directed Self-Compassion Reflection Program can prevent the re-experience of this illness.

Your Involvement

Your involvement in the study will include the following tasks:

You will be asked to complete a demographics form and several short questionnaires throughout the study (at the 3-month, 6-month, 9-month, and 12-month check-ins). The questionnaires will ask about how you feel, think, and act in certain situations, as well as your day-to-day experiences.

Phone Interviews

You will be asked to partake in several phone interviews where a researcher will ask you a series of question about your mood and history of daily functioning. The phone interviews are brief and may last between 5 to 20 minutes. The first phone interview will determine your eligibility to further participate in the study. Once eligibility is established, there will be four additional phone interviews at the 3-month, 6-month, 9-month, and 12-month check-ins where you will be asked similar questions.

Self-Compassion Reflection Program

Once eligibility is established, you will receive access to the Self-Compassion Reflection Program. The program is made up of 7 modules in total and you will receive one module each week for 7 weeks. The anticipated benefits of the program include: (a) preventing future episodes of depression, (b) an increase in self-compassion and mindfulness, and (c) a decrease in symptoms of depression.

The SCOPE Trial is comprised of 4 parts:

  1. We will first ask you to read and complete our consent process, then complete a number of brief online questionnaires (Part 1).
  2. We will also schedule to complete a phone interview (Part 2) with you during which a researcher will ask about your general mood, daily functioning, and mental health status. This interview is brief, and should take no more than 5 to 20 minutes of your time. Based on your responses on the questionnaires and phone interview, we will determine whether or not you are eligible to continue with the study.
  3. If deemed eligible, you will receive access to the 7-week online self-directed Self-Compassion Reflection Program (Part 3). The program is made up of 7 modules, and you will receive one module each week for 7 weeks.
  4. After completing the 7-week program, we will monitor you progress at four different check-ins (Part 4). The check-ins will occur at approximately 3, 6, 9, and 12 months since starting the Self-Compassion Reflection Program. During each scheduled check-in, you will be asked to complete a set of online questionnaires and a phone interview with a researcher (similar to the phone interview at Part 2).

You will be compensated with electronic gift cards to one of four vendors (Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Cineplex, Chapters, or Esso & Mobil) of your choice for your participation in the study. The compensation are as follows: a $10 gift card for completing the first part and a $10 gift card completing the second part of the study, and then, if eligible, you will receive a $30 gift card for each of the first three check-ins (for a total of $90 in gift cards) and a $40 gift card for the fourth (and final) check-in. You are eligible to receive a total of $150 in gift cards.
